Your Ultimate Guide to Picture-Perfect Memories
Newborn Photography Prep:
Welcoming a new baby into your family is an unforgettable moment, and capturing those tiny details in the first few days is a treasure you'll cherish forever. To help you feel confident and prepared for your newborn photography session, I've created this comprehensive FAQ guide! This post is packed with helpful tips from my prep guide, plus a few extra insights. Whether you’re wondering what to bring or how to ensure your baby is photo-ready, you’ll find everything you need to know here.
What Should We Bring to Our Newborn Session?
Pack your bag with these essentials to make the day stress-free:
- Snacks & Drinks: Keep yourself energized during the session.
- Breastmilk or Formula: At least two bottles to keep your baby content. Of course you'll be able to feed during our session any time baby needs - but having bottles on hand makes the entire experience run more seamlessly.
- Pacifiers: So I can more easily help soothe your baby and keep the peace.
- Sentimental Props: From a family keepsake to Daddy’s favorite tie or a beloved stuffed animal, these personal touches add meaning to your photos. (Avoid glittery items as they don’t photograph well!)
Flat Lay Photo Items:
Flat lay photos are a beautiful way to incorporate personal elements into your session. Bring any of the following items for a custom announcement photo and keepsake image:
- A special onesie, tiny socks, or shoes.
- Positive pregnancy tests
- Hospital wristbands
- Ultrasound pictures to highlight your journey.
- Baby’s teethers or small toys for a pop of color or whimsy.
- IVF shots, if they’re part of your story, to celebrate your journey to parenthood.
- Any personalized items like blankets, hats, or name signs.
How Should We Dress for the Session?
Dress Comfortably: My studio is kept warm to ensure your baby stays cozy. Lightweight, breathable clothing is best for parents.
Are you being photographed? No Need to Stress! You’re welcome to do your hair, makeup, and even change outfits in the studio. I’ll be working with your baby in the meantime. Don't feel any pressure to show up photo-ready. Parent photos are taken at the very end of the session so I promise, you have time to prepare and not feel rushed.
Not being photographed?: Please just focus on your own comfort! I know how much your body has been through after giving birth, the sleepless nights, and how hard it can be to get a newborn baby out the door and into the car. Please, don't feel a need to "impress" me - I'll be in leggings and a Heartfelt Captures t-shirt myself, so it's easy for me to stay comfortable and maneuver around the studio!
How Can We Prepare Our Baby?
Keep Baby Awake Beforehand: If possible, try to keep your baby awake and avoid feeding them during the hour before your session. This helps ensure they’re sleepy and relaxed (think milk drunk!) for those adorable poses. The first thing we will do when you arrive, is dress-down and feed baby while I take your Flat Lay photos.
Don’t Worry if Baby is Awake: Even if your baby is alert, we’ll adjust and capture beautiful photos. So please, no reason to feel stressed if baby sleeps the entire way to the studio. Eventually, they'll be sleepy again and I'll get those adorable sleepy baby photos.
Where Will the Session Take Place?
My cozy home studio! Located in Inman, South Carolina, my converted home studio (previously our dining room) is filled with props, wraps, headbands, blankets, and all the comforts you and your baby need, and secluded from the rest of my house for privacy. The environment is smoke-free and pet-friendly (our pets are kept out of the studio - but we do have cats and you should be aware of this if you or your baby may have allergies)
How Long Will the Session Last?
Newborn sessions typically take 2–3 hours. This allows time for:
- Feeding and soothing the baby.
- Safe, gentle positioning.
- Capturing a gallery of timeless images you’ll cherish forever.
- Incorporating multiple different props, wraps, and scenes.
When Should We Schedule the Session?
Ideal Timing: Within the first 14 days of life, when your baby is most likely to sleep through the session.
Flexibility for Late Arrivals: If your baby is older than two weeks, don’t worry! I still capture stunning images, though the poses may be a little different.
Can Family Members Be Included in the Photos?
Absolutely! Parents and siblings can join, but let me know in advance so I can adjust the session length, and prepare for family shots. If I am not alerted in advance, and family shots are requested during the shoot - I will not be able to accommodate. There is a small additional cost for this option.
Is Safety a Priority?
As a mother of two, your baby’s safety is my top priority. Here’s how I ensure it:
No risky poses (e.g., the "froggy pose" or unsupported head placements).
Soft surfaces and positioning pillows for all setups.
Clean, perfume-free, and baby-safe handling.

What About Baby’s Skin Imperfections?
It’s normal for newborns to have baby acne, peeling, or blemishes. During the editing process, I gently remove temporary imperfections while preserving the unique features that make your baby special. Birthmarks and permanent features will remain untouched unless you explicitly ask for them to be removed. I will ensure baby's skin tones look as natural and true-to-the-eye as possible, while reducing the yellow or magenta tones newborns can sometimes carry.
How Will We Receive Our Photos?
You’ll receive a personalized online gallery within 7–14 days, where you can:
View and download your high-resolution images.
Purchase prints, canvases, and gifts for yourself and family members with the click of a button.
Bonus Tips for a Seamless Session:
Use Your Due Date as a Guide: We’ll tentatively schedule your session around your due date and adjust once baby arrives.
Expect Breaks: Feeding, soothing, and cuddling breaks are part of the process. No session in my studio is ever rushed. I always say "I am not in the business of making babies cry" and I have more than enough patience to allow your little one whatever they need to feel their best on set. Plus, I enjoy having a chance to have a quick snack or drink some water, too!
Trust the Process: I’ll handle everything so you can relax and soak in the moment.
I hope this guide answers all your questions and helps you feel ready for your newborn session! Capturing these precious moments is an honor, and I can’t wait to create timeless memories with your family.
